overview

The Greater Miramichi Community Transportation Volunteer Driver Program consists of a door-to-door ride-home service that is provided by volunteers with their own vehicles. The drivers are responsible for transporting passengers from their homes to their destinations and offering additional assistance when required.  The service focuses on transporting low-income individuals or people with limited transit means who live in areas where transportation options are limited or difficult to access.  The service is provided during regular business hours and based on volunteer drivers’ availabilities. Clients can reserve a ride in advance by dialing a designated number (dispatch). Volunteers are reimbursed kilometers traveled and revenue is generated from the reimbursement of kilometers by clients based on a pre-established scale. The revenue must be adequate to support paying drivers’ mileage and travel costs while also remaining affordable for customers.

The main objectives of the Greater Miramichi Community Transportation Volunteer Driver Program consist of the following:

  • To provide a reliable, safe, affordable, and inclusive transportation service that meets the needs of the Greater Miramichi residents, especially the targeted clientele.

  • To offer targeted clients a means to travel between their homes (door-to-door) to their planned destination when other transportation options (ex: taxi, public transit, active transportation) are not available physically and/or financially.

Description of Service

The Volunteer Driver Program is an integrated service of Northumberland Community Inclusion Network and the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission and is subsidized in part by the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation (ESIC) via the Community Transportation Grant. This transportation service runs on a non-profit model.
